Summer 2019 Newsletter
Dear Parent / Guardian
Welcome to our 2019 Autumn term Newsletter. Enclosed is your invoice and our new timetable for the Autumn term. Please return the slip at the bottom of your invoice with your payment or alternatively reference your payment transfer with the pupil’s full name. Our bank details can be found on your invoice. Should your email address have changed, it is very important that you write this on your slip as we use email more and more to get information out to parents.
The new Autumn term commences on Saturday 7th September 2019. However we will hold a uniform sale and open day at Styx on Friday 6th September from 4.00- 7.00pm. Only cash or cheques are taken at the shop so please come prepared. Your invoice will tell you which class your child has been placed in, however we realise that this is the term where children often like to take up new classes so please do email us as soon as possible if you have any enquiries as places in classes are limited. Like all other schools we require a term’s notice for withdrawal from any classes – we do except late notice during the Summer term as September seems a long way off but this grace period has now come to an end.
We hope you all enjoyed this year’s show, “Born to Shine”. We were very proud of the professionalism of all the students and very grateful to all of our helpers for making this possible. We also thank you for coming to watch the show and supporting your children during watching week at the end of the term. This was a great success, giving everyone a chance to see the technical improvement the students have made during the year.
DANCE WORLD CUP 26/6/20 – 4/7/20
As you may already be aware, we will be entering the Dance World Cup qualifiers in the hope that we will once again qualify for the finals (to be held in Rome). This is currently the top Dance competition in the world and auditions for our team will take place on Sunday 8th September at the following times (please note age is taken from Jan 1st 2020);
9 and Under - 2.00 - 3.00pm
13 and Under - 3.00 - 4.00pm
Seniors - 4.00 - 5.00pm
Please email us to let us know if your child wishes to attend. The qualifiers will take place in Jersey on the 29th Feb and 1st March with the finals taking place at the end of June/beginning of July. Rehearsals will take place on Sunday mornings starting after October half term and students auditioning must attend Ballet and Modern classes at G.A.T.E. Attendance to Theatre School and Tap would be preferable but not compulsory. We will be taking into consideration not only the child’s ability for the type of dance piece we are choosing, but also their attendance, age category, facility and dedication, as well as their ability to perform in a highly competitive environment.
We are very excited to announce that we have several new classes this September including Contemporary Dance which will follow the new I.S.T.D. Inter Foundation course (for school years 9 and above) and brand new Adult DanceFit. We have also split our Classical Greek classes into Junior Beginner and Junior Bronze which will give any students wishing to start Greek the opportunity to join! Please email the office if you require more information on any of the above.
Remember to check your invoice for details of when your child’s class is taking place as we do have more than one class in certain dance grades and theatre school levels. Our new timetable is enclosed and also available on our website. Last year we had lots of last minute requests to move pupils to different classes which became very difficult so we would ask that you have a look at the timetable sooner rather than later! Please note the top of the timetable shows the day and room. As always we have tried to place classes back to back to minimise your journeys. Places in classes are limited so please let us know as soon as possible if your child wishes to take up a new class.
Students recently attended a U.K. Class competition in Jersey. This was an amazing experience for all involved and we were thrilled that our school was presented the Teachers’ award for Best Channel Island school. Students really excelled themselves picking up routines very quickly and we had placings in every category with many winning their section. Congratulations to all involved.
After huge success at the Eisteddfods and Dance Festival this year we are very proud to announce that 4 more students have gained places at vocational colleges in England. After completing the foundation year at Laines, Eliza Mason has now gained a place on their 3 year Diploma course while Ellie Mahy has gained a place on the Diploma course at Performers. Both Sam Ashcroft and Stephanie Street have successfully auditioned for the up and coming Brighton Academy. We wish them, and all of our students leaving us, the best of luck for their future careers. We currently have many students away training at top vocational colleges and are very pleased that through this and competitons such as the Dance World Cup, G.A.T.E. has now become well known as a ‘feeder school’ for talent.
We were also very excited that G.A.T.E. was chosen to provide the guest choir for professional singing group “Blake” at Beau Sejour this July. Thank you to Jo Martel for her expert tuition.
GADOC PANTO JACK AND THE BEANSTALK
The team at G.A.T.E. will be choreographing the panto this year alongside Dennis Burns as Director. Auditions for this take place on Sunday 21st July, please like and follow GADOC’s facebook page for more details. We are also looking for Panto babes that will only perform in the first half of the show. Panto babes are approximately 4-7yrs old and should attend Ballet. Students will be able to do DWC, Jack and The Beanstalk and GADOC’s Easter production of Annie should they wish to, as GATE teachers are involved in all of these productions and have organised rehearsals accordingly.
Please ensure your child starts the new school year with the correct dance uniform. Black bottoms should be worn for Theatre School classes with the correct colour T-Shirt and Theatre School folders should be brought to each lesson. Hair should also be tied back for all dance classes and worn in a bun for ballet. Please pop a hairbrush and hair accessories into your child’s dance bag. We realise many children come straight to us from school so this will help them look smart for their classes. Don’t forget to name all uniform items!
We will post the exam results for this last session to the students as soon as they are received. Congratulations to those who have already received their results from earlier exams taken this term. Amazing results once again, well done! We aim to hold another exam session this winter as this is a non Dance Festival year. Therefore this year we aim to concentrate on the technical training of our students.
If you are a Facebook user please can we ask that you like (& follow) our G.A.T.E. Facebook page. It has proved to be a very successful way of getting information out to you quickly, especially around showtime and Eisteddfod etc. We also have an Instagram account you may wish to follow. Next year’s show will be held from the 5th – 7th June 2020 if you wish to pop that date into your 2020 diary. Eisteddfod dates can be found below or on the Guernsey Eisteddfod website page
Should any of our senior school age students wish to volunteer to help with younger classes, please pop us an email with your availability. The younger students absolutely love having a senior to look up to in class.
We would just like to remind parents that when children’s classes are finished and they leave the studios they are no longer our responsibility. The same applies if a child is dropped off early and plays in the park before their lesson. Should you be running late (or have got stuck behind a tractor!) please don’t hesitate to text us. Please remind your children to come back up into the studio to wait if they have not been picked up.
Please note one term’s notice in writing is required for any withdrawal from classes. Unfortunately failure to do so will leave you liable to pay the next term’s fees as we are unable to fill your child’s place in time for the start of the new term.
We thank you for your continued support and wish you a relaxing Summer break.
Brian and Catherine Webster
