Summer 2019 Newsletter
Dear Parent / Guardian
Welcome to our 2019 Summer Term Newsletter. Also enclosed is your invoice and class details for the Summer term.
We think it would be fair to say as we embark on the last term of the school year that the Guernsey Academy of Theatrical Education has had a truly remarkable (and busy!) start to 2019! Many successful competitions have kept us all busy but wow, the achievements have been worth it. We are so proud of all the hard work that has been put in by everyone and as you will see from the results overleaf, the trophy cabinet is now well and truly overflowing! Suffice to say this consistency in results across the three genres of dance, music and drama prove that G.A.T.E students really are ‘triple threat’ performers and for those who wish to make a career from performing, we make sure they have all the necessary skills before they leave us! On that point we would like to congratulate Claudia Wallace who will be following in the footsteps of her teacher Mrs Catherine and attending the prestigious Elmhurst ballet school on a scholarship this September, We wish her the best of luck! But whether you’re considering a career in performing arts or not, the life skills you learn at G.A.T.E will defiantly serve you well!
We are now preparing for this year’s G.A.T.E show ‘Born to Shine!’ where we can put all of these amazing accomplishments on display.
SHOW WEEK (Monday 13th – Sunday 19th May)
(Please note there will be no normal classes during this week)
The show is a highlight of our school year and this years show dates are as follows:- Friday 17th May at 7pm, Saturday 18th May at 2pm and 7pm and Sunday the 19th May at 2pm.
This will once again be a variety show of Dance Festival, Eisteddfod work as well as some new pieces. It is therefore very important that you inform us if you are away.
Our show letter has all the details you will need. We are not issuing pre-booking vouchers this year. This will allow parents to buy as many tickets as required from day one online from www.guernseytickets.gg
For children who have just started with us, and will therefore not be in the show, we would like to them offer a complimentary ticket to watch instead. Please let us know if you would like to take us up on this offer and we will notify Beau Sejour box office.
Rehearsals for the show will be as follows but children will obviously not be required for the whole amount of time, so please refer to the detailed rehearsal schedule enclosed.
Mon 13th May; rehearsals at the Styx details (in show letter)
Tuesday 14th May; rehearsals at the Styx (details in show letter)
Wed 15th May ; dress-run (details in show letter); 5–8.30pm (Beau Sejour Theatre)
Thurs 16th May; dress run (details in show letter); 5–8.30pm (Beau Sejour Theatre)
As always, we will allow our younger pupils to leave all rehearsals as early as possible and parents are advised to stay. However, chaperones will look after your children during the actual show. We will always endeavour to run on time but please be patient if things should over run. As always, we are looking for volunteers to help usher, operate the follow spots, help backstage and chaperone. A list for people wishing to volunteer will be put up on the Styx noticeboard.
Next term we have two exam sessions taking place, one is confirmed as May 2nd and 3rd and the children have been notified. The other is yet to be confirmed but we have applied for July 4th and 5th for Modern and July 8th – 12th for Ballet and Tap. We will inform you by letter if we feel your child is ready to take their exam and this letter will include all details of extra coaching sessions and exam costs. We are still waiting for confirmation of examiners from the I.S.T.D but we have already begun preparing the children who we feel are ready. It is presumed that all children taking I.S.T.D dance lessons wish to take exams but please feel free to inform us should your child not want to.
This year has been a fantastic term for achievements and all the hard work from our fabulous teachers and pupils has definitely paid off. Congratulations to everyone involved. Many thanks also to you, the parents, for providing costumes, transport and moral support!

Our Summer workshop will take place from the 12th-16th August at the Performing Arts Centre (PAC), each day from 9am-1pm with a showcase on the Friday afternoon. This will be taught by guest teachers from the West End and ourselves. The cost for the week is £170. Please book early if you would like to attend as places have been filling up fast.
Following on from being asked to perform at four concerts featuring the UK Group G4 over the past two years, the GATE choir have been asked to guest on the evenings of July 12th and 13th at Beau Sejour for the UK group BLAKE. The GATE choir will be providing backing vocals and harmonies for four numbers with BLAKE plus one number on their own! Your support would be appreciated.
If you are a Facebook or Instagram user please can we ask that you like (& follow) our G.A.T.E Facebook or Instagram page. It has proved to be a very successful way of getting information out to you quickly when needed. We are also endeavouring to send more information out by email but this means we do require a regularly used and up to date email address.
Please can you ensure that the correct uniform is worn to class and that all uniform is named. This term has been particularly bad for grooming and we can assure you this does make a difference to how the children perform in class! The lost property is also overflowing once again! All hair must be tied back neatly for class (and in a bun for Ballet) and only mobiles/change of shoes should be brought into the studio.
Please note one term’s notice in writing is required for any withdrawal from classes. Unfortunately failure to do so will leave you liable to pay the next term’s fees as we are unable to fill your child’s place in time for the start of the next term.
We thank you for your continued support and wish you a relaxing Easter break.
Brian and Catherine Webster
