Autumn 2018 Newsletter

Dear Parent / Guardian

Welcome to our 2018 Autumn term newsletter. Our new term starts on Saturday 8th September. Also enclosed is your invoice and our new timetable for the Autumn term. Please remember to return your payment slip if settling your account by cheque or cash. Bank details for online payments can be found at the bottom of your invoice.

Please be aware that there is a Dance Festival this year and due to the limitations on age and group size, your child may have been moved into a different dance class/group. This allows us to have the right number of children of the correct age, height and ability in each group we enter.

This next school year should prove to be a very exciting one with the Guernsey Dance Festival, the Guernsey Eisteddfod, the Jersey Dance Festival and our annual summer show to look forward to! The dates of these and other events are printed on the reverse side of this newsletter in our diary section, which we ask that you keep to hand during the term. With all these events to look forward to, there also comes a huge amount of organisation and commitment and we therefore ask that you assist us by keeping us informed of any dates your child may not be available.

We welcome back our fantastic support network of teachers; Joanne Martel, Tracy-Anne Wilson, Rianna Higgs, Alessandro D’Aleo, and Michaela Street. Next term we have two new teachers joining us at G.A.T.E, Both ex students from G.A.T.E. Miss Ruby Tapp and Miss Jodie Wilson. Ruby has trained for the last three years at the ‘Performers College’ in London and Jodie has completed her dance teacher training in England and is now fully qualified I.S.T.D teacher. We look forward to welcoming them back to the G.A.T.E family.

ACHIEVEMENTS

In this, our 15th year anniversary of G.A.T.E., we could not be more pleased with the success the school has had. We started the year by performing with G4, a professional male classical group, at Beau Sejour to sell out audiences. G4 were so impressed with our choir we were asked to perform with them again this September. We then went on to win a broad range of trophies at both the Drama and Music Eisteddfod. This included most outstanding performance for the second year running!  Next was the Dance World Cup Qualifier where all our pieces achieved qualifying results. These pieces, along with many others were then showcased in our annul school show.

Straight after this , Layla Ferguson, Zaheer Annes and Jake Morris from G.A.T.E. were chosen to perform in a professional production of ‘South Pacific’ at St James. Finally, of course, coming home from the finals of the Dance World Cup in Spain with no less than 1 Gold, 2 Silver and 6 Bronze was the icing on the cake.

Add into the mix our Easter workshop and wow, what a year it’s been! It has been a truly wonderful celebration of our school and we thank you all for your support in these endeavours. Thank you for our nomination for the Pride of Guernsey Arts Contribution, we hope with your help we may make final!

DANCE FESTIVAL

The Guernsey Dance Festival 2019 takes place at Beau Sejour from 22nd - 27th January and is an excellent opportunity to compete against other Guernsey and Jersey schools in a friendly atmosphere. We look forward to this event very much and are sure that those who attend dance classes will enjoy being a part of it.

In preparation for this, all dance students who are old enough have now been placed into groups which they will remain in for the Autumn term. During your child’s class, they will learn a dance piece, in addition to their normal syllabus work, which will then be entered into the competition. When choreographing the dance piece we will place the children into different positions and shapes. If we know a child is not available for the competition they can still learn the piece but will be positioned where they will not affect the shape or patterning. As the students learn new sections of their group piece each week, attendance in class is absolutely essential and students should watch even if they are unable to dance.

The groups are costumed to a very high standard and we have to order these made to measure costumes a long way in advance. These costumes can often be expensive (usually between £35-£50 per costume) so we do ask you to consider very carefully if you would like your child to take part. Please contact us if costing is an issue. All of your child’s costumes will be re-used in our Summer show, the dates of which are the 17th,18th and 19th May 2019.

Lastly, the Dance Festival encourages great team spirit. If a child suddenly pulls out or continues to miss class rehearsals it really does let the whole team down. We kindly ask you to give all this information your full consideration. If your child is not available for the Dance Festival, please inform us before the start of term. You can do this either by e-mail, telephone, or just a short note on your return invoice slip.

Some students will receive letters during the summer stating that they have been selected to perform a solo/duet in the Dance Festival. These competitors are chosen by ourselves taking into account a student’s exam results, performance levels and commitment to their classes. Though we would love to give everybody a solo we can only choose those who we feel is best suited to the high level of competition. Unfortunately solos cannot be requested and we have once again been asked to limit entries to a certain number.

G.D.P.R.

Due to the new G.D.P.R laws coving data protection, we have recently updated our policies, guidelines and consents, along with our data privacy statement. Whilst G.A.T.E has always done it’s utmost to insure the privacy of your data, the new law asks that all parents / guardians of students and students over 18 must have read and agreed to these statements and policy’s.

We will also be sending out medical consent forms to any student who we presently hold medical data for. If you wish to inform us of any medical conditions we should be aware of, then please ask for a form. We will only ever share this information with the relevant tutors.

You may also have noticed that our emails are now covered with an option to refuse marketing. However if you choose to unsubscribe you will still receive emails that are deemed to be of importance to you as a parent or guardian.

You can review our policies & guidelines and data privacy statement here.

UNIFORM

All uniform is available from our pre-term uniform evening on Friday 7th September from 4.00pm – 7.00pm in the Palladium at Styx.  Please  note this is different to our normal uniform shop because we will be starting the Autumn term on a Saturday. Like usual we will begin term on a Saturday and end on a Saturday leaving both Saturdays of half term free.

Should you wish to order tap or jazz shoes, please email us with your child’s English shoe size and we will try to have them in stock. After this, the Uniform shop will run weekly on Saturdays from 9.30–11.30am.

SAYING GOODBYE

Sadly this year we are saying goodbye to several students who are leaving us that have been with us since G.A.T.E. started. Mostly they go on to continue their education in the UK and would like to wish them every success. In particular, however,  we have six students who have successfully gained places at top vocational colleges in the performing arts industry.  Charlotte Ewin and Jessica Pearce will study at ‘Performers College’, Ellie Mahy, Rachel MacDougall and Eliza Mason at ‘Laines Academy of Performing Arts’ and Luella Taylor at the ‘Academy of Contemporary Music’. We wish all our leavers the very best with their futures.

SNIPPETS

We may take some of our pieces to the Jersey Dance Festival which runs from Wed 28th Nov – Sat 1st Dec More details to follow for the certain selected pieces along with costume details and any extra rehearsal dates.

With our growing teaching schedules we are finding e-mails to be the quickest and most efficient way to resolve any of your enquiries. Please also feel free to text us on the school mobile if we are unable to answer your calls whilst we are teaching.

This year’s Summer workshop will be based on the hit musicals ‘Barnum’ and “The Greatest Showman”. Our guest teachers will be Stuart Dawes and Jill Hyde both experienced West End performers and teachers. This workshop will take place from 13th- 17h August at The Performing Arts .

We will once again be holding some ‘catch up’ tap classes for those students starting tap in September. This allows older students a chance to join students of their own age. Details to follow shortly but these will take place in the week leading up to the start of term and are aimed at students joining Grade 2 and above.

If you are wishing to pay your fees by direct bank transfer can you please make sure you reference your payment with your own name and your child’s name (i.e Catherine Webster of Maisie Webster) to avoid any confusion. Please contact us if fee payment has become difficult, as we can perhaps discuss arranging a payment plan.

We still have a few outstanding accounts from last term  which we ask are settled as soon as possible. Accounts unsettled by the end of term may incur an extra administration fee. Please also note that one term’s notice in writing is required for withdrawal from any classes. Unfortunately failure to do so will leave you liable to pay the next term’s fees as we are then unable to fill your child’s place at such short notice.

Please remember that dance is a discipline and students should therefore wear their correct named uniform with hair tied back for all dance classes. How students look when they enter class really does effect their performance in the lesson!

We thank you for your continued support and wish you a relaxing Summer break.
